The Midlife Fat Loss Debate Everyone Is Getting Wrong

Hi Reader,

For the last few years, I've become increasingly annoyed by the fitness influencers and gym bros shouting the same message at women in midlife:

"You're not losing weight because you're not in a calorie deficit."

(Have you been hearing this too?)

Thanks, Chad.

Super helpful.

(Insert eye roll here.)

Here's the thing...

A calorie deficit DOES matter.

I'm not arguing against science.

But when a woman in her 40s or 50s says she's struggling with fat loss and the response is simply "eat less," that's a cop-out.

It's lazy coaching.

And frankly, it's a little rude.

Because what they're ignoring is everything that determines whether a calorie deficit is actually sustainable in the first place.

They ignore the chronic stress.

They ignore the poor sleep.

They ignore the hormonal shifts.

They ignore the years of dieting.

They ignore the all-or-nothing mindset.

They ignore the emotional exhaustion of trying to be perfect Monday through Thursday and then feeling completely out of control by the weekend.

If creating a calorie deficit was all it took, every smart, driven woman over 35 would be walking around effortlessly lean.

But that's not what I see.

What I see are successful women who know exactly what they "should" be doing.

They're not lacking information.

They're lacking support.

They're lacking strategy.

They're lacking a plan that actually works with their body instead of against it.

That's why I teach three things:

1. A Healthy Metabolic Environment

Supporting hormones, sleep, stress resilience, recovery, blood sugar balance, and overall metabolic health.

2. A Strong Mindset

Not more willpower.

Not more restriction.

Learning to trust yourself around food.

Breaking free from perfectionism.

Stopping the obsession with the scale.

3. A Nutrition Strategy

And yes, this includes a calorie deficit when appropriate.

But the deficit is not the foundation.

It's the finishing touch.

Could someone white-knuckle their way through a calorie deficit and lose weight temporarily?

Absolutely.

People do it every day.

But that's not the question we should be asking.

The real question is:

Can you sustain it?

Can you maintain the habits?

Can you keep the weight off?

Can you continue feeling strong, energized, and in control of your health six months from now?

Because temporary weight loss isn't the goal.

Sustainable transformation is.

The truth is that sustainable fat loss in midlife isn't about eating less and less.

In fact, it's entirely possible that the calorie target an online calculator spits out won't work as expected.

That doesn't mean calorie deficits don't work.

What it may mean is:

  • Years of dieting have reduced your metabolic rate.
  • Your body is under chronic stress.
  • Hormonal and metabolic dysfunction are making adherence difficult.
  • You're dealing with barriers that nobody is investigating.

Meanwhile, you're told:

"Everything looks normal."

Sound familiar?

Fat loss in midlife is about becoming healthier, stronger, more resilient, and more metabolically efficient.

And that takes time.

It takes strategy.

It takes patience.

The fat loss becomes a byproduct of that process.

That's the difference between chasing weight loss...

And building a body—and a life—that allows you to thrive.

If you're ready to stop chasing the fastest drop on the scale...

Or you're tired of feeling like you have to eat less and less and less just to make progress...

Hit reply and tell me where you're feeling stuck. I'll respond personally.

I'd love to hear what's been frustrating you most and help you think through your next step.

To your strength,

Bridgette

Hi Reader, One of the biggest shifts I made in my own health journey—and one of the biggest things I teach my clients—is this: Your hormones don't work alone. When most women start struggling in midlife, they immediately assume they need to "fix their hormones." And while hormones absolutely matter... They're only one piece of the picture. Your hormones are constantly interacting with your gut, your liver, your thyroid, your blood sugar, your nervous system, your sleep, and even your muscle...

Hi Reader If I had a dollar for every woman who sat across from me and said... "My doctor told me everything looks normal." ...even though she felt like garbage. She's sitting in front of me saying... I can't lose weight. My energy is tanked. I'm waking up all night. My cycles have changed. My hair is thinning. I'm snapping at my family over everything. To name a few things.... So… now what? Here’s what many women don’t realize: “Normal” doesn’t always mean “optimal.” Most standard lab...

Hi Reader, A common phrase I hear from women is.... "But I eat SO healthy... why can't I lose weight?" And honestly? I believe them. This used to be me, as a matter of fact! Many of the women who come to me are already eating: ✓ Organic ✓ Low carb ✓ Very little sugar ✓ No seed oils ✓ Whole, minimally processed foods ✓ Lots of vegetables They're making a tremendous effort. So why aren't they seeing the results they deserve? Because healthy eating and strategic eating aren't always the same...
